Languages
The official language of Uttarakhand is Hindi, but it is spoken in various regions in different dialects. Kumaoni and Garhwali are mostly spoken here. Apart from this, Pahari Boli is also popular in some areas. Under the broad category ‘Kumaon’, the popular sub dialects are – Johri, Danapuria, Ascoti, Sirali, Gangola, Khasparjia, Faldakoti, Pachai, Rauchoubhaisi, Majh Kumaiya, Sorayali, Chaugharyali and Kumaiya. The sub-categories of the Garhwali dialect include Jaunsari, Sailani and Merchi. The major dialects here are influenced by Sanskrit, Central Pahari, and Sauraseni Prakrit and these languages are written in the Devanagari script.
